Who wouldn’t love to combine their passions on the wine and on the green? We’re not just talking about any private label, but labels hand-crafted by your favorite golfers! Some of the world’s top golfers have either created their own labels or are partnering with vineyards to produce some the most delectable varietals. Heres some examples of golfers who are deeply involved in the vino game:
Luke Donald, partnered with Bill Terlato of Napa Valley-based Terlato Wines International to develop the Luke Donald Collection of wines. This partnership has yielded a Claret-style red wine blend and the Luke Donald Chardonnay. Luke is personally involved in blending and tasting—the perfect way to stay busy between successful tournaments.
Ernie Els, “The Big Easy” has traveled the globe sampling the world’s best wines. He took his passion for the grape back to his homeland of South Africa in 1999 he opened Ernie Els Wines, where his dedication to excellence became evident in his Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, and Chenin Blanc, among others.
Cristie Kerr, former LPGA world number one and two time major champion, launched Curvature wines in 2009 with partner Pride Mountain Vineyards. The project was launched because of Cristie’s passion for wine but also to help raise awareness for breast cancer. The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon earned a coveted 90 points from Wine Spectator.
Gary Player, when the “The Black Knight” isn’t out designing courses you can probably find him tending to the vines of his boutique vineyard in South Africa, Quoin Rock. With each of the first two wines in the collection named for one of his major victories, expect at least a few more vintages in the future.
For these oenophiles, wine is one of those pleasures that increases exponentially if you’ve found a way to produce it yourself, especially if you’re able to produce it thanks to your love of golf. The next time you finish a round on the links, consider winding down by opening a bottle of one of these luscious labels!
